Why Does The Left Reject Israel?

Progressive hypocrisy has shown itself…again.

On October 7 2023, Israeli citizens were massacred in their homes by the internationally recognised terrorist group, Hamas. This senseless killing included methods of execution such as immolation, beheading, and fusillade, ending the lives of 1,175 people, including 36 children and taking 250 hostages.

Any morally comprehensive society would see this attempted genocide as impermissible with supporters becoming unrecognised amongst the general population. But, as with every attack against the Jews, some of the biggest European cities rejoiced, celebrating in the massacre of Israeli children. In fact, parades took place across London, Amsterdam, Paris, Marseille, Berlin and Brussels, to name a few.

By any civilised society’s standards, we would see sympathy and anger over what happened to the innocents in Israel. But instead, we received the complete opposite. Why?

Part of the reason is the rapidly changing demographics. In the UK, for example, in 2001 there were 1.6 million Muslims. As of today, there are about 4 million. The same story in Germany, The Netherlands, France and Belgium, each with almost a double growth rate.

This is not to assume all, or even the majority of Muslims are Hamas appeasers, but, this change in demographics accounts for the rapidly changing intolerance of Israel.

We can see the same shifts in university students. Muslim majority in the UK was less than 5% in 2000, and now reaches almost 25%. Again, this is not to assume anti-Israeli beliefs, but it does explain the scale of this ideological shift.

But, the rise in anti-Israel perspectives clearly cannot be adjudicated to just a demographic shift, especially considering the number of non-muslims attending the parades and protests.

But, unsurprisingly, many, if not most, of the individuals not from a muslim background attending such rallies align on the political Left.

So why then does the left have such hatred towards Israel? Why do they ignore normal moral standards wherever Israel is involved?

As we can see, when it comes to Ukraine, they believe in the complete opposite. The political Left strongly stand with Ukraine’s right to defend itself from a foreign invasion – as they should. But then, why does this logic not apply to the only non-muslim middle eastern country to exist.

Even though October 7 was the deadliest event against Jews since the holocaust, it was not the first attack on their nation. Up to 4,000 rockets are fired at Israel, numerous suicide bombings, and multiple attempted cross-border raids are seen annually. From the Six Day War to the Yom Kippur War, Israel has been on the receiving end of relentless aggression, but then vilified when they retaliate.

Israel, a country similar in size to North Macedonia, is surrounded by Lebanon, Syria, Jordan, Egypt, Iraq, Iran, Qatar, Algeria, Libya, Sudan, and Yemen, all of which have declared them an enemy. The goal of all these countries? The eradication of Israel and its people, as Hamas showed almost a year ago.

Progressives in Britain call for the unaccommidation of Russia and for no concessions to be made. So why is the same not for Israel?

They also call for weapons to be supplied so Ukraine has the ability to defend itself. Again, the same is not said for Israel.

Today, Israel attempts to rescue the hostages still in captivity. Instead of unequivocal support, the media taints were with vilification.

Look at how the posters of captive Israeli’s are torn down in cities across Europe. One of Britains reporters labels this hypocrisy perfectly.

“Tearing down posters of Israeli hostages is like tearing down posters of lost dogs and cats. It demonstrates a profound lack of empathy and basic humanity.”

– Douglas Murray

If we saw someone tearing down a poster of a lost pet, we would be offended. We would see that person is morally unjust, with a diminishing sense of other’s humanity. So where is the outrage against the removing of the Bibas kids posters’?

The only other reason Israel is held to a separate standard is anti-Semitism.

This perplexing viewpoint has been a shape-shifting virus for decades. At one point, it was because of their religion, and then their race, then their success. Today, it seems to be because of their nation state.

Israel embodies the values hated by progressives. That is, the self-determination to fight back against hatred and belittling, their assertion of a strong national identity, with a maintenance of a culture devoid of the progressive ideals of open borders, diversity and transnationalism.

Israel’s success offends the Left. She demonstrates the prosperity of traditional Western values free from moral relativism.

Why can a country 11 times smaller than the UK produce so much enterprise and innovation, even with its constant bombardment?

If there is moral equivalence between cultures, why has Israel seen more fruition amidst a multitude of Middle-Eastern failure?

Those who loathe Israel, don’t just despise the only Jewish state to exist, but they despise all successful nation states – including the remarkably successful ones created in 1707 & 1776

They detest the pillars of self-reliance, traditionalism, and national pride that have underpinned the success of the United Kingdom and United Staes. Instead embracing moral relativity, hedonism, and internationalism. Israel, by standing on its own, stands as a testament to what can be accomplished when a nation state commits to its cultural and historical identity.

Thus, the disdain for Israel is part of a broader antipathy towards any nation that succeeds on terms that deft progressive orthodoxy. It’s an antipathy that extends to any expression of national pride and self-determination, particularly when these expressions are rooted in traditions that predate the progressive agenda. Israel’s success and Middle-East’s failure keeps as a reminder that no alternative paths to prosperity exist.
